CJ & Sarah
Somehow, we have been friends for almost 20 years. By the numbers, we’ve got four kids between us, five moves, way too many degrees, one career change, approximately 1.7 million hours of phone calls, and nine half marathons. Then there’s the stuff you can’t count in a friendship of this duration - the celebrations (buying our first homes!), the losses (life as an elder millennial-lolsob), the happy tears (babies!), the heartbreak (friendship breakups), and the little ways we show up for each other every day (coworking/laughing on Zoom).
If we were giving a ten second summary of our friendship, we spend 1/3 of our time talking, 1/3 trail running and 1/3 sending memes back and forth. We haven’t gotten sick of each other yet and have no plans to. When Sarah jokes that she is tired of CJ, CJ quotes one of our favorite memes telling her to “take a nap!”
We get to experience the joyful parts of what Amina Toso and Ann Friedman so aptly call a Big Friendship, but we spend just as much time audibly processing the heartache and disconnects that come with friendships in adulthood, too. In fact we spend so much time talking about friendships and the role they play in our lives from daily phone calls, to friend weekends, to the pain of friendship breakups, to how to make new friends that we decided to write a book on friendship.
A woman stopped us once, six miles into a trail race as we chattered along, to tell us we would make a good “radio blog.” While we agree (in part because we think everything the other one does is amazing. Can you tell we are a Gemini – CJ - and a Libra – Sarah - both with rising Scorpio?), we talk enough already. We want to hear what you have to say. Who is your person? Who was your person? What are your friendship stories? We’ve spent so much of the past two decades together thinking about friendships, talking about friendships, and prioritizing our friendships. We hope you’ll join us in honoring the huge, but often overlooked and underappreciated, role they play in our lives, by telling us all about yours.
